Darren Sammy just got out for 89. That was a magnificently timed innings. Even though he didn’t get his 100, leaving 32 balls for Andre Russel and Lendl Simmons isn’t too many. Sammy and Simmons turned it on at the right time.

And that sort of statement is the joy and sorrow of the modern West Indies fan.
Now they’ll probably bowl crap and Ireland will win in 40 overs but still.

A rare moment of self-awareness from a commentator, just now. Ian Bishop musing on the balance between bat and ball.
“What interests me, I think it’s too difficult on good pitches, with small grounds and the way things have gone. Do the viewers, do the spectators view it in the same way? Do they like the plethora of 300 run scores that we’re seeing? I think that is the main issue, that is the main thing to find out, that is the question. Do the viewers and spectators like it? There’s no sense commentators not liking it, we’re not the important ones.”
I don’t like it. It’s getting silly now, the amount of runs teams are getting in the last ten overs of an innings. 10-15 runs an over should be bloody difficult and rare. So far in this tournament, it’s routine. You’d have to be crackers to want to be a bowler now.

Everyone loves an Ireland win, possibly except if it hammers another nail in the WI’s coffin. Mixed feelings (especially as I backed Afghanistan for the first upset, in the quiz…).

Have to agree with this. Apparently beating Top-8 opposition is a sign of being uncompetitive, while being routinely obliterated (England vs Australia) is a sign of being competitive.
What is more, Ireland did not just luck into victory. They only lost a cluster of wickets on the brink of an extremely comfortable victory, making it just a comfortable victory instead.
Then again, India were apparently competitive in their 4-0 drubbing in England in 2011, and hence rewarded with a 5th Test, while Sri Lanka, who lost a 3-match series 1-0 in the same year were uncompetitive. And they are probably still not considered competitive after WINNING the series in England in 2014.
As for routine 300+ scores, that should be a rarity if a team finds itself into 100/5 or so. Not the norm. It is not like the likes of Darren Sammy (or Dwayne Bravo for that matter) and so have such impressive batting records (avg 25-ish). Even if the likes of Amla, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Bevan were to come, such scores ought to be the exception.
Now it is more like, if the bowlers strike early, and take 5 wickets, the score will be 250-300. If they don’t, it will be 320-350. In other words, the rewards for bowling well are too small. This might have to do with the bowling quality of some sides (WI play with 3 specialist bowlers at most for instance) though.

It wasn’t a huge surprise that the Irish won this. The depth that the Windies have plummed to still upsets me and I have far less sympathy for the two Trini boys who have been left out. Senior Bravo is a bit of an a**e and Pollard actually has a poor ODI record from around 90 matches. However the WICB have still ripped that team apart.

Is it just me, or was hblove once a good BTL poster? His recent stuff on the associates stinks, and reads like The Secret Diary of Dave Richardson. Yet he professes to despise the Big 3. It’s all very strange.
